Join ~Nois for the Sixth installment of their “Curiosity Series” at Constellation Chicago. Every fall, ~Nois kicks off their season with a program exclusively featuring the works of composers with strong ties to Chicago. This year, “Curiosity” will feature new works from Kari Watson, Carlos Bandera, and Augusta Read Thomas alongside a special performance by Chicago’s own, Masso Quartet.

The DePaul Series for Contemporary Music provides reading, performance and recording opportunities for School of Music composition majors. This concert will feature guest ensemble ~Nois (pronounced “noise”) alongside School of Music musicians and composition students.

~Nois presents Chen Yi’s incredible Concerto Grosso “Ba Yin (The Eight Sounds)” at the NASA 2023 Biennial Conference as a featured concerto soloist.
About Chen Yi:
As a prolific composer who blends Chinese and Western traditions, transcending cultural and musical boundaries, Dr. Chen Yi is a recipient of the Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001. She has been Lorena Cravens/Millsap/Missouri Distinguished Professor at the Conservatory of Music and Dance in the University of Missouri-Kansas City since 1998. She was elected to American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2005, and the American Academy of Arts & Letters in 2019.
~Nois will be in residence working with the composition students of Texas State University and also present a recital

~Nois will be at SFA giving a masterclass to the saxophone studio (1-2pm) as well as their Good, 4 ~U program at 7:30pm.
This concert will feature two performances of I Tell You Me, first by Amanda DeBoer Bartlett and second by Annika Socolofsky. In the work, Annika draws from her personal experiences in this “feminist rager lullaby for a new, queer era” as she highlights societal perceptions of femininity and sexuality.
In between the two performances, a panel conversation between the two vocalists, Darian Donovan Thomas, and music critic Hannah Edgar. will discuss the themes of the work to explore queerness and expression through the lens of performance and composition.
